About Songkran

Songkran marks the traditional Thai New Year and is one of the country's most beloved celebrations. During the festival, people take to the streets armed with water guns, buckets, and hoses, turning entire cities into joyful water battles. The water symbolizes cleansing, renewal, and washing away misfortune before the start of a new year. Beyond the famous water fights, Songkran has deep cultural and religious significance. Many Thai families visit temples, make merit, offer food to monks, and participate in traditional ceremonies that honor elders and ancestors. While celebrations take place throughout Thailand, Chiang Mai is often considered the ultimate Songkran destination. Visitors can experience days of nonstop festivities, cultural events, parades, and some of the country's largest water battles. Songkran offers a unique combination of cultural tradition and playful celebration, making it one of Southeast Asia's most memorable festival experiences.
