Surva Festival

Surva is one of Eastern Europe's most extraordinary and visually striking festivals, held each January in the Bulgarian city of Pernik just outside Sofia. The International Masquerade Festival brings together kukeri — traditional Bulgarian masquerade performers — from across Bulgaria and neighboring countries for a competition and procession that is one of the most primal and visually overwhelming spectacles in Europe. The kukeri tradition is one of Bulgaria's oldest — dating back to pre-Christian Thracian rituals — and involves performers dressing in enormous costumes of animal skins, elaborate carved wooden or papier-mâché masks, and weighted belts carrying large metal bells that clatter and thunder with every movement. The costumes vary by region but share a common function: to frighten away evil spirits and ensure a healthy, fertile year. At Surva, over 5,000 kukeri from hundreds of groups perform in the streets of Pernik in a procession of staggering visual and sonic intensity. The enormous figures, terrifying masks, and thundering bells create an atmosphere that feels genuinely ancient — a ritual that predates recorded history being performed in the 21st century.
